dark and gloomy....apart from the shorts!

I know, I know – poor show again! Honestly, its hard enough trying to fit the running in with the work and socialising never mind the writing about it afterwards! Also, given my performance throughout January, it's not really worth writing about….

28th Jan – Sunday – left house planning on doing long run. Wind soon put a stop to that. Was walking soon after I passed Pinkerton, round the bottom of Doon hill. Didn't get much better. Ran up closed round and across the grass track at Wester Broomhouse. Then down to Eweford, West Barnes, down along the Biel burn and through John Muir to East Links car park, where my chariot awaited….

30th Jan – Tuesday – ran around town. It was dark.

1st Feb – Thursday – handicap 5km. Only 6 of us running. Ran quite well, only someone needs to tell Ian Sills that its rude to overtake a woman, especially close to the end. (That or we need to think about getting a separate trophy for first female). Anyway, you guessed it, I was second. Bummer. Struggled to get into first place and Ian just bounced on home past me. I hoped this was a return to form – I managed 1min5secs faster than Jan, and 5 secs faster than December, and only 1 sec slower than October after peak of marathon training. About time I had a decent run. Although next time we need to do something about the traffic – was going great guns round Lochend road when a car decided it wanted to drive down the road I was about to gallop across. To which my response was I'm not stopping, followed by a realisation that if I didn't stop I would probably come of worse than the car, at which point I stopped, as did the car (an emergency kind of stop) so I carried on….I'm sure that added on a couple of seconds to my time…. It was still dark.

3rd Feb – Saturday – headed out from Belhaven on a longish run at 9:30. Headed out with Sheila M, Val and Fay – needless to say didn't see much of Val and Fay at all! Ran up to Spott, round by the 2nd Ford to Pitcox, along the road back towards Eweford, but turned up to Little Spott, down Daniel's Brae and up the other side, through Spott again, up the closed road to Wester Broomhouse and back to Belhaven. Made it up all the hills and felt loads better than the last foray with Val and Fay – although still think the starting speed manages to knacker me far too early on in the run. Lovely day – mild, sun shining and definitely not dark! Best weather for running in we've had for weeks, and weeks, and weeks……

4th Feb – Sunday – after a chance meeting with Sheila K on the 3rd (in the hairdresser, getting my hair dyed the obligatory club purple – Sheila M/Anne etc) we went out for a wee run. Headed out from Belhaven again through John Muir Country Park through the trees to the wee bridge and then back along the beach to the car park. Nice day – again – although cooler than 4th.

6th Feb – Tuesday – ran round town. It was dark. And shorter run than normal – committee meeting. Got new running top though – Helly Hansen, courtesy of the club. Quite a snug fit but kept me warm. I've just washed it – it says max shrinkage 6% - I'm not sure I could even afford that much!

8th Feb – Thursday – intervals (ie running round and round in circles, in the dark). I arrived late so no warm up for me….straight into the session of 6x800m in 5.5mins (or 1km if you are fast). Did ok – first two were slow (no wonder – no warm up) but rest were good speed. Alison made me run faster – last 800m was 3min49secs which I'm sure is one of my fastest. Then we did 2x30m sprints. Think I should stick to those – managed to beat Grant and Anne on those ones – obviously have a good start and burst of power, just trying to sustain any further than 30m that I'm not so good at. Although not so bad again this week….
Anne gave me some lovely green shorts to try out – cycling style. (some club members really want green shorts, and cycling are more comfortable to run in – although dodgy for men!) Not sure Anne was impressed with my comments about me looking like the jolly green giant in them, although she nearly choked on her coffee when I said that I would need to take along a tonne of sweetcorn to each and every race that I run in them!

9th Feb – Friday - running club night out – Garvald Inn. Nice food, shame about the waitress who was clearly not into good customer service. Anyway alcohol was flowing nicely, snowflakes were falling outside….everything you could want for your Christmas night out! (I know its late, but we did have 2 nights out before Christmas too – anyone think we should reform as social/drinking club with a bit of running on the side?)

10th Feb – Saturday – Sheila M not running – she's saying she has a virus. Hmmmm – what kind of virus can you catch from drinking way too much red wine? You'd think she'd learn….I went later on in the day (to give me a chance to rehydrate fully). Ran about town in the dark – thought I was going well until I measured the course after. Actually only running normal training speed. Weather crap again and it was dark.

11th Feb – Sunday – on my own again – motivation lacking a bit. Headed out from house, down to Dunbar, round coast/cliff paths, and Winterfield golf course to Belhaven. Nice views. From there I headed out the dump road to Biel burn, turned up to West Barns and then onto Eweford. Crossed under A1 and ran on path alongside A1 to Spott roundabout. Crossed again and ran past Newtonlees to Broxburn and back up to home. Made it up my hill, but it was a struggle. Weather was odd – very changeable. Spitting when I left the house, then it got warm (so much so that I thought t-shirt/shorts would have been good), then windy, and finally raining and cold again. Please, please, please can I have a nice running day at the weekend again?
