update....

So whatever I said about running a 10k after a hen night counts double when running a half marathon after a wedding.......very very daft.
That's about all I can say about East Kilbride half.

Sheila M picked me up at the Gyle before 7, had only gone to bed at 1. This stuff they say in all the running advice books/mags/websites about getting a good nights sleep must be right. I was knackered!

Don't think I've recovered yet anyway as have not even updated my paper log yet!

EK was on 24 June. Splits were:
1 9.10
2 8.42
3 8.10
4 9.26 (bit of a hill)
5 8.57
6 9.56 (that's the long steep hill)
7 9.13
8 9.03
9 9.30
10 9.48
11 10.46 (the long steep hill again)
12 9.32
13 9.00
.1 1.01

So 2.02.01 total - was bit disappointed - was running so well until mile 9. My hip started hurting - I tried to ignore it or think of those going through more pain but that didn't work. Pressed my finger into my glutes (not a good look) whilst running up the hill to mile 11 and that actually did relieve the pain a bit. But still sore. My third best half mara time, but equally 3rd worst out of 4 this year so far! Think I'm raced out.....

26/6 - Tuesday club - ran up to Eweford and round to Little Spott, Spott and back to Halhill. Teaching all the newer runners the route for the next weeks summer series. Not sure that was a good plan or not - maybe if they hadn't known they would have tired on route and I could have beat them. Might need to be more astute next race. Felt a tough run - legs sore. Need massage - have one booked for

27/6 - Wednesday - torture night. Legs massaged for first time in months. Boy it hurt.

28/6 - Thursday. Luckily Anne, Ian R and Stuart were heading down to Norham to run 3km in the name of the club championships. Those of us more normal runners stayed at home and went out for a mid length run in the rain, round John Muir and some other damp spots.

30/6 - Sat. Headed out for a long one - doing about 5 before meeting up with Sheila K for another 5. Again bloody hard run - legs just didn't want to move. Went round the bottom of Doon Hill - bit of a mistake as the grass is growing up to waist height, with seeds all getting stuck in my trainers etc. Made it to Sheila's and then had a wee rest and restock the fuel levels before running out to the lighthouse, round the cement factory and back home. Didn't make it up the hill though - amazed I made it as far as I did

01/07 - Sun. Went out for another run. Not sure what possessed me but anyway. Ran round the back of Doon Hill (well I say ran, kinda wheezed my way up the hills). Ran up to the top of the brunt, round to the house with red chimney, up the closed road, Eweford and down to Belhaven where my chariot awaited......and on for a scone to Lauderdale park. Ahhhhh.

03/07 - Tuesday - ELSS race at Dunbar. I was dreading it. With a Capital D! sometimes it is sooo much worse when you know where you are going. I'm disappointed that Fiona didn't stick to the race master plan (run round slowly and overtake people on the down hill just before the finish line!). Fay ran well considering she had done mad run 40+ miles in the past 6 days, including a run that morning. I'd be doing well still to be able to move after that intensity of running. All in mad mad mad celebration of her 60th Birthday on Thursday 05th. So of course we had to have cake afterwards.......

05/07 - Thursday - intervals. Feels like it's been months since I've been to intervals. Soooo hard. And even worse when you are tired anyway, and don't get a warm up in cos you arrived late. Did these funny sets again - 10x400m, in 2mins45secs. big rest after 3rd and 6th interval - an extra 4 mins. Fiona was flying - tried to keep up but gave up on lap 6, took it easy and then went for it on number 10. Still only managed 1.42 whereas fastest previously was 1.39/1.40.

07/07 - Saturday - long run. Headed out on my own - round the back of Doon Hill, onto the second ford, from Pitcox on towards Stenton, down to Biel mill, down to the pink house on the old A1, and down to Knowes farm where - yup chariot was awaiting. (or more correctly I awaited chariot as chariot driver was busy looking at the fish jumping up the weir). Hmmm. Felt a lot better than most of the runs in this update. At least managed to run up all the hills. Terrible weather meant second ford was actually a ford - think that was the only time I've had to use the bridge there.

08/07 - Sunday - mid length run. It was soooooooooo hot. Didn't feel too bad when running, but after I stopped I figured it was actually pretty hot. Did the easiest run possible to get mileage to an acceptable level for the week (acceptable being 25-30 on average, higher being even better!). Ran from house down to Dunbar, round the coast and Winterfield golf course, along dump road, round West Barnes and through John Muir to East Links - where you've guessed it, my chariot awaited. Much prefer this point to point running rather than looping round - means no big hills right at the end of the run!

Anyway tomorrow is my first night in my promoted club position as membership secretary - best go an prepare.

Random thought for the day - what is going on in the world of tights at the moment? I thought running tights were not the most flattering but way more sensible than the wierd and wonderful tights women are wearing. They range from the spiderweb type patterns, to neon brights and now white with black spots. Is this all about trying to recreate your youth when woolly tights came in all colours to match your outfit when you were about 3? not quite sure what the story is.....
