so first update of the year

I've been busy.....and ill.....so it's been a while coming!

Last run of last year was fab. Sheila and I set out from Stenton and ran up round Stoneypath, along by Stoneypath Tower to Garvald, round by Traprain law, through Luggate and back to Stenton. Felt a really good run, hilly, managed to run all hills except the last wee bit of the hill from Luggate back up to Stenton. Gorgeous scenery. Especially at Stenton Tower. Met Fiona as she was out for a wee run round Trapain. Longest run for a while and felt like a good effort. Little did Sheila know how important it would be......till she was picked in the draw for the club's London marathon place!

Plan was to run again on 31st December - but felt like I didn't fancy it. So went out for the day and had a wee wander about Peebles. Couldn't really eat all of my lunch and then began to think something was wrong! (well not being able to eat my lunch is always an indicator that something is up). Started to think that I was feeling better so got ready for the black bun run, but felt a bit crap when I got there so didn't run. It only got worse from there - I was struck down with Norovirus aka winter vomiting virus for the next few days. It is baaaadddddd. Don't catch it. I refrained from running for nearly a week but even after that couldn't manage very far or fast for a wee whiley.

Did a 12 mile one on 13th Jan - longest since the bug. Felt really hard.

16th Jan was my birthday - a big one at that. Brian took me away to Paris for a long weekend so some more "rest" time from running. Although Brian kept moaning his legs were tired from the amount of walking we did! Paris was fab - I'm really into the whole concept of a weekend away somewhere foreign, with different language and money. Only disappointment was the fact I only managed to fit in 1.5 pancakes in the weekend. And the weather on our return......

On the Monday after I came back - 21st, Sheila and I headed out for another long run. It was raining pretty heavily all the way and most cross country routes were soaked through so we did a loop up round Wester Broomhouse, Spott, Second Ford, Pitcox, Little Spott, Spott, Closed Road, and back to Sheila's. The rain was icy cold and we were freezing. Had to shower and then Sheila made some lovely soup to help us thaw out after. Forgot to mention that Sheila did a 4 mile run before. And after the soup she headed out again to train her jog scotland folks. A bit of a recovery run there I think!

Last Saturday we were through in Glasgow - picking up my wedding dress (yet another excuse why I have no time to be typing updates so regularly). We then headed up to watch the athletics in Kelvinhall. It was great - Great Britain and NI won. Saw some folk I've watch on telly a few times - Craig Pickering, Jessica Ennis (who got 4 pb's out of 6 of her long jumps) & Lisa Dobriskey to name a few. Very good. Pole vault even more impressive in person than on the telly. Must go again.....

And on Sunday we headed out for another long one. Sheila ran up to meet me, doing an extra 4 miles again. We then headed out in gale force winds up Doon hill and round the fields up to the top of the Brunt. From there we headed down to woodhall dean (and up the other side), left towards Innerwick, then right to Thurston Mains and a loop round by Elmscleugh, Woodhall and then retracing our steps down to the ford at woodhall dean and then back up over the brunt (but by a slightly easier route) and back to mine. Sheila was being picked up by Ivan, and he was meant to take a malt loaf with him as part of Sheila's post run fuelling plan.....but Ivan being Ivan he forgot! It was a very impressive run though, especially given the weather conditions and the hills on route. I was very pleased - one of the hills I've only made it all the way up once before, and one only twice before. So getting a bit better.....until

Tuesday. My foot hurt. Don't know what it is or why but today (Thursday) had to sit out intervals. Lucky for me the weather is atrocious! Lets hope it gets better soon.

Will endevour to update more regularly.....
