Easter eggstravaganza!

I’ve had another quite light week of it – it’s all
gonna change soon though.

Last Tuesday we had a committee meeting after club so
could only fit in a short one – ran from club through
the trees to Spott roundabout. We then headed up
towards Spott, up the closed road (Ossie/ Ozie? Dean)
and down by Wester Broomhouse to Eweford and back to
Halhill. Some of the ladies ran along the grassy path
at Wester Broomhouse to add in a bit of distance
before running back to Halhill.

On Thursday we have started the summer training
interval sessions. Tonight was 2x800m in 5 mins,
1mile in 10 mins, 2x800m in 5 mins. I cut out one of
the 400s from the mile to get a bit of recovery in but
otherwise managed the full session and kept a
relatively even pace throughout all of the 800ms. Not
bad for the first summer training session, will need
to keep it up now.

After club all those who had been at interval training
went along to Umberto’s for a bit of a feed. There
were 18 of us at Umberto’s – quite a gathering. Karen
and Clarissa came along to catch up a bit on the news,
seeing as they haven’t been running for some time now
– bumps are really showing now! Also Ian Sills came
along although feeling a bit down about his injury –
he won’t be able to run London but hopefully will
catch another marathon this year, and defer his London
entry to next year.

Umberto’s was good as usual – plenty of food and drink
flowing.

On Friday I was back at my leg man for a quick rub.
Legs not too bad this time, slight tightness in quads
where they join the knee, slight tender spot in
hamstrings, ITB ok, but oh dear……the calves were very,
very, very tight. They really hurt when getting
treated. Eeek, must stretch more religiously as I
don’t want an injury that means no running. Think I
will head back for another quick go at the calves
quite soon.

On Saturday I decided to take it easy as the legs were
a wee bit tender and also it was a lovely day. Brian
headed out fishing up the Tyne at Samuelston, so I
walked from there to Haddington, had a wander around
Haddington and then back to Samuelston. Samuelston to
Haddington was about 3 miles so walked at least 6 –
not bad really and it loosened the legs a tad. On the
way into Haddington I walked along part of the route
that we ran on one of last years East Lothian Summer
Series runs – the one where Sheila and I got lost
(along with about 10 others who were following us).
Better luck this year I hope.

And today we had our Easter extravaganza. Sheila
Morrison, Val, Fay and I ran from Val’s house up to
the A1, crossed over and ran around the bottom of Doon
Hill. We eventually joined up with the route we took
last Sunday, where if we turned left we would run
round the farm and end up near the top of starvation
brae, and right took us down past Karen’s big read
chimney to Doon bridge and Ozie/Ossie Dean. At Ossie
Dean we went into the field to go and roll out Easter
eggs. It was a bit tough as there was lots of barb
wire about but we managed to crawl over the gate and
under the barbed wire. We got up to the top of the
hill and rolled out eggs down. Sheila had decorated
hers as a man, Val had half as dark blue with gold
stars to represent Australia and the other half a red
headed man to represent Scotland and I painted a green
stripe around mine to represent the Dunbar running
strip. Fay hadn’t time to decorate hers and didn’t
get into the painting session we had at Val’s before
we set off. Once we had rolled the eggs, Fay headed
off home as she has picked up a cold and didn’t want
to push it. Sheila, Val and I ran up to Spott and
turned to Little Spott and ran up Daniel’s Brae. And
I ran all the way up – yee hah! From there we ran
down towards Eweford, but instead of running under the
A1 we headed alongside the A1 on the path towards the
Spott roundabout. We crossed at Spott roundabout and
headed back along Spott road to Dunbar and into Val’s
– where we had a brief pit stop for juice and cake!

Taking it easy...

I haven’t got a lot to write about this week. On
Tuesday I had a work thing so couldn’t go to club. I
had a lot of other commitments too this week so
couldn’t fit in an extra one. So Thursday was the
first run of the week and it was the handicap 5k. It
was going ok too – the first time since I won back
November/December time that I managed to overtake
anyone when running round. I managed to get to the
front of the pack for the second trip down Kellie road
but at that point figured out I wasn’t going to be
able to run much further with the agonising stitch I
had. I’d already tried the breathing trick but had
figured out that I wasn’t going to get rid of the pain
that easily. It was a bit like whatever happened to
me at the Musselburgh race course race last year.
Anyway, whatever I had eaten earlier on the day didn’t
appreciate being shaken up and down rapidly…..

On Friday I was through at my mum and dads and on
Saturday went to the Vitality show at the SECC. There
wasn’t as much fitness stuff as I was expecting but
was still pretty interesting. Had a quick trip into
the discount Achilles Heel store but didn’t see
anything to purchase…will have a quick look online
once I’ve finished writing this. Stitch still
hurting….

Today Sheila, Fay, Val and I all went out for a run.
We headed off up to Spott from Belhaven, via Eweford
and Wester Broomhouse and Ossie (???) Dean. (all this
time I’ve been thinking its called Dozy Dean – lucky
Val’s here to keep me right!). From there we headed
up along what Sheila calls Val’s SAS course – up at
the bridge to the cottage with the big red chimney and
then up through the fields beside the farm buildings.
Turn left and you can run up the Brunt, but we passed
on this and kept on going. We then got to run down
Starvation Brae and back down to the Spott roundabout,
along to Eweford and back down to Belhaven. It was
about an 8 mile round trip, good quality though as it
was uphill to the top of Starvation Brae. This is
only about the third time I have run up that way, and
managed to run up all the hills, no stopping. I tell
you, this week’s lighter mileage and disappointing
stitchy thing have helped the motivation no end – I
actually wanted to go further than we did and felt
like I had enough energy to manage it. I guess a rest
week every now and then really can do the world of
good…

Still no pb in sight....

So another week goes by and much has been made of the
shambles that was Edinburgh half marathon. I’m now
beginning to feel quite sorry for the organisers (if
you review the comments on Runners world website you
will too – they even had to put out an official
apology that was reported on the BBC website!) Shame…

Tuesday night I think I felt a bit tired, but even
better than that, Fay also felt tired! Amazing – all I
need to do is tire her out but getting her to run a
fast half marathon and then I can easily keep up! We
just went for a short run, and as it is now lighter in
the evenings, we made our first trip up into the
country. We ran through the trees at Halhill, up to
Eweford, Wester Broomhouse, back to Spott roundabout
and down Kellie road back to the club. I found it
tough going though…..obviously all these races are
beginning to have an effect.

Thursday night Brian and I went out for a light jog,
planning on running through John Muir Country Park. I
was planning on going for 6, then moved this down to
5, then 4….and eventually we ended up doing about 3.5
miles! We couldn’t go through the park due to all the
mud and grime. There had been a new path laid by the
burn, but unfortunately it was under a couple of
inches of water, so we weren’t running there either.
We cut up to West Barns from beside the burn and ran
up through West Barns to Eweford, back down beside
Halhill and then turned in at the hospital. From
there we ran over to Back Road and down back to the
car. How annoying that Brian can keep up (in fact
it’s usually me struggling to keep up with him, whilst
he lollops alongside) without any training! Wish he
would give me his natural ability if he’s not going to
use it.

And then finally Dunbar boundary race. And yet
another race where I don’t get a pb. So
disappointing. It was quite warm but windy on the day
and we had a good turn out. Club members all turned
up early to help out with registration and setting up
the hall. On the way round it was really nice to see a
lot of friendly marshals I know and they all shouted
their encouragement as we ran past. I felt a bit crap
at about 4k to 6k but then managed to pick it up a bit
after that. I felt I ran the last 2k quite quickly,
but my brain really wasn’t working well at figuring
out my splits and what I should be doing. I was so
not on this planet that I forgot to take my splits,
not that I think that would have helped. Emma was
first Dunbar women at about 48 mins, then Sheila M,
closely followed by Fay, then me, then Val, Lindsay
and Vicky. Sheila M, Fay, Me, Lindsay and Val where
all within about a minute and a half of each other. I
didn’t get a pb (was 54 seconds outside it), and
didn’t beat my own time from last year (9 seconds
slower, so I probably was slightly faster given I had
to run slightly longer) but my official time is
quicker than last year, so not all doom and gloom!
Brian is disappointed he didn’t get a pb, stopped at
about 3km as he thought he was going to puke but his
determination got him round at 50mins and a few extra
seconds. Not bad for having about 3-4 training runs!

Today I went out for another run. I could have had a
day off, but I’m not going to be able to make it to
club on Tuesday so thought I’d better fit one in. Did
just over 8 miles (GPS’d it to be sure) and it was a
nice scenic route at a nice easy pace. Ran from my
house down to Whitesands, round the golf course, along
by the harbour and up by the swimming pool, along then
around the cliff path and round Winterfield golf
course, along up by the hospital and back to the train
station for a lift home. I quite enjoyed it but as
ever, found it difficult after about 6 miles on my
own. Saw a lot of amazing junk that has been washed
up by these high tides, and had to dodge a lot of
golfers but otherwise quite enjoyable.

Next run is the dreaded 5k handicap. Hope Fay’s
handicap has been reduced!
