Haven’t written for a while – first up was Sheila
Morrison and I running to Haddington on Sunday 16
October. It was warm and fine weather and a nice day
for a run along. I felt much better than the previous
attempt back on the same day as the London marathon –
when we tried it before we watched the Marathon,
eating chocolate and drinking coffee, followed by a
bagel and then ran. No wonder I felt crap on that
occasion – had eaten far too much prior to running.
The route we follow starts at Belhaven and runs
through John Muir Country Park, then along the Tyne to
Hailes Castle before running the back roads to
Haddington. I measured the route – 12.28 miles
apparently. We didn’t go fast due to the terrain, but
felt ok. Lunch was fab (Poldrate Brasserie).

Tuesday night was a dark run through town and West
Barnes – about 6 miles. Thursday was intervals
training with Ian – quite an ok session for me. The
others did 6 x 800m on 5 mins, whilst Sheila Morrison
and I did 2 x 500m, 2 x 600m and 2 x 500m again. Ian
Sills managed to overtake us both when we were running
the 600m stretches!

On Saturday Sheila Morrison and I did a 5 mile run
round John Muir Country Park – weather was mild and
pretty good running conditions for this time of year.

Today (Sunday 23 October) we ran from Belhaven up to
Eweford, Wester Broomhouse, down Dozy Dean, up to
Spott, round the second ford and on to Pitcox, back to
Eweford and then Belhaven. It was crap weather –
really heavy rain. Did lead us to start worrying
about what the weather will be like next Sunday when
running the half marathon at Jedburgh….

My legs hurt and I was freezing for ages after todays
run – came back and had a nice hot shower and went off
to another pilates session. I haven’t been to pilates
for a couple of weeks so this weeks session seemed
pretty difficult. It’s all good for the core strength
though.

Have thought of some more items to put on the don’t
eat list – some don’t eat ever and some just not too
close to a run –
• Cheese savoury – I mentioned this last time but
forgot to put on the top ten listing. I should never
eat cheese savoury as it always repeats and gives
either heartburn or indigestion but for some reason I
tend to forget
• Cheese and onion pasties – again I should never eat
these, they have amazing repeating properties
• Pesto – I can’t eat too much of this, tends to
repeat. Bit unfortunate as I really like pesto.

Have just started making tea, we are having a veggie
casserole made with some of Sheila Morrison’s home
grown veggies (salsify and some other thing that I
can’t remember the name of). Anyway for any of you
out there planning to grow or buy some salsify I’d
advise you not too. My hands are all funny brown
stains now, and the liquid that oozes out of the
salsify as you are peeling and cutting the veg has a
funny glue like quality that made my fingers stick
together and was really difficult to wash off… anyway
thanks Sheila!

Looking forward to Jedburgh now, and more importantly
the afternoon and evening celebrations after we make
it round!

A bleak week...

Hopetoun House 10k – would have been a lovely run if
you are into hills and cross country! I logged my
worst 10k time of the year (although thinking
positively this is still better than my best of last
year). The weather was freezing with a stiff breeze,
although when running in sheltered areas it was pretty
warm. The route was 50% tarmac path, 30% grass and
20% forest trail. It might have been a nice run if it
hadn’t been a race….there were plenty of nice hills to
run up, some of them more than once. More worryingly
my back had a funny ache running down hill at about 5k
and my quads were hurting on the up hills. I had my
give up mentally with me on Sunday so ended up doing
something I haven’t done in over a year – I walked on
one of the hills. Eeek. Weird though – even with
walking it was a faster time that last years 10k
times, so think I might have set off a bit too
quickly.

Tuesday night at club we had two prospective new women
members. They couldn’t have picked a worse night to
come! It was so wet, dark, bleak and windy on Tuesday
but I quite enjoyed the run. I even managed to run
down Kellie road without too much moaning!

On Wednesday Sheila Morrison and I braved the wet,
windy, bleak conditions again, but this time during
daylight hours. We ran up Arthur’s Seat (the steep
side) and down road Duddingston Loch and up the
innocent railway. This is the route of my first ever
10k about 2.5 years ago, and I hated every minute of
it! I ran up Arthur’s Seat too fast on that occasion
and had to stop at the top to try and rid myself of
the terrible rubber leg feeling. Yesterday the hill
didn’t seem too bad, although there is one short
stretch which is a bit tough on the way up. Again the
quads were hurting on the uphill sections. I took GPS
on this little trek and it measured at 6.24 miles so
pretty accurate for a 10k.

After Arthur’s Seat Sheila and I went for lunch (well
it’s been a while) at David Bann’s – the vegetarian
restaurant. It was fantastic food, really enjoyable.

And tonight it’s time to revisit interval training. I
hope Ian has read my diary recently and does decide to
take it easy…..

At the weekend Sheila and I are doing our half
marathon warm up run (for Jedburgh on 30th October) by
running from Belhaven to Haddington and guess what?
Then going for lunch….

What not to eat...

The Doon Hill race seems to have been pretty
successful, although one comment was to make it less
windy next year. I sympathise – I was only
marshalling but it was pretty breezy. Also my house
is quite near to Doon Hill and it was windy and cool
early on in the day, getting pretty warm when out of
the breeze.

Last weekend’s running was not quite so enjoyable for
me. I had terrible heartburn, caused I think by
eating a cheese savoury sandwich at the post Doon Hill
lunch. This just got worse through the day and stayed
with me on Sunday too. It’s not fun running with
heartburn. Normally I leave at least 2 hours between
eating and running but throughout the years have
identified a number of foods that I just cannot
eat/drink before running because of the terrible side
effects and have listed some of these below….

Theresa’s top ten foods and drinks not to eat before
running:
1. Chewing gum – causes terrible wind which then
causes terrible stitches
2. Fizzy drinks – as above
3. Caffeinated coffee – this is a drink that most
magazines would have you consuming prior to running as
allegedly it makes you run faster. It does have some
terrible side effects though leading to quite
substantial stomach cramping…
4. Toast – gives me heartburn
5. Eggs – again give me heartburn
6. Milk products including yoghurt – generally just
makes me feel quite sick when running and cause
indigestion
7. Salad veg – cucumber, tomatoes, lettuce, onions etc
– cause indigestion and repeat on you when running
8. Baked beans – heartburn
9. Apples – heartburn or indigestion and wind causing
stitches
10. Soup – a recent newcomer to the list but recently
have been finding that my lunchtime soup consumed at
approx 12:30 seems to want to reappear during a run at
approx 6:30. Not a nice feeling.

Anyway, that does mean that pre running diet is pretty
restricted – I can manage some staples such as nut
bars, chocolate, malt loaf, chocolate, porridge,
chocolate, non salad sandwiches and yet more
chocolate. Needless to say I prefer running early in
the day so I can then consume all of the above.

Last weekend following the cheese savoury sandwich I
went for a 6 mile trot down and round the cement
factory, Whitesands and round to home. This took in
part of the Doon Hill hill, probably to me the
nastiest first section. Then I had kidney beans and
cheese in my dinner which didn’t let the heartburn let
up. On Sunday I just went out for about a 3 miler –
running along the road to the base of Doon Hill and
round through a field where the track comprises of
funny straw like material that is not compressed very
well. The sensation is a bit like running through
sand. So again running part of the Doon Hill route
with 1.5 ish miles up hill and a nice relaxing down
hill route home. So essentially over Saturday and
Sunday I almost ran the blooming Doon Hill race
anyway!!

How depressing though on Tuesday at club night – we
are back onto the winter town runs. It started out
okay – thought I was running at a comfortable speed
however something happened at about 30 mins through
when I suddenly felt we were all running far too
quickly….at least I managed to avoid running down
Kellie road.

On Wednesday night Run4It the new running shop on
Lothian Road was having an opening evening between
6-9. Sheila Morrison and I attended at about 8:00 and
didn’t leave until about 9:30. The shop was having a
15% discount so was well worth a look. Due to my
excellent performance in some exams I sat earlier in
the year and getting a new job, Brian owed me a few
presents. I spied just the thing and got myself a new
toy….a GPS thingy so I can now measure how far we are
actually running and due to the 15% off got myself
quite a bargain. Also got some trusty socks…..and a
freebie pair. Sheila Morrison got socks and a nice
red Sugoi long sleeved half zip top. Quite fancied
that myself….

Also in the shop opening there was a free Sports
Massage person and I decided to give it a go. Oh my
god – I decided to tell him about a slight pain I had
in my knee area so Sports Massage person checked my
illiotibial band (ITB) and told me this was really
quite tight and that he would need to “strip it out”
and this would be quite painful. He wasn’t joking.
Had I not been in a shop full of people I would have
been screaming out loud. For some reason I then let
him have a go at my hamstrings and calves…Sheila then
had a quick massage on her hamstrings which were
pretty tight and was pulling similar “I’m in a hell of
a lot of pain” face as I had been. Hmm – we have his
number if anyone wants to give it a go!

On Friday I decided to take GPS on a quick outing
round John Muir Country Park and was quite depressed
with the results. On a route that we thought was 4
miles when calculating 10 minute miles was only in
fact 4.1 miles. I keep thinking we actually run
faster than 10 minute miles but guess we might not.
However some good things – I was sort of hung-over so
probably wasn’t running my best anyway, the route was
on sand, grass, over bridges and across tree rooted
ground so we will run faster on roads and my max speed
over the distance was apparently 7.1 mph. Don’t know
when I did that but clearly we do run faster than 10
minutes miles on some surfaces. Also good to know the
calorie burn – over the route I apparently burned off
492 calories. Although I think I consumed the same in
chocolate and carbs due to the slight hangover….

Racing on Sunday at Hopetoun House Cancer Research 10k
with Sheila Morrison – will let you all know how it
goes…
