The greatest plans.....

So Sunday the 24th September, Prestonpans half. An
excellent plan……or so we thought. Plan was for me to
get to Sheila M’s for 8:30, then head over to the Pans
to register between 9:00-9:40. It had been absolutely
pouring in Dunbar for at least 2 hours at that point,
but with my optimistic head on thought it might have
been nicer weather in Prestonpans. So we headed off
from Sheila’s and drove to Prestonpans, thinking that
it was perhaps a bit damp to be running a race (ok so
the rain was like thunderstorm rain at times). As we
pulled into the car park, at about 9 so probably only
the really keen there so far, we noticed that 1 – they
were mostly male, and 2 – very skinny, serious looking
runners. The rain and the fact that only 80 had pre –
registered led to us doing an about turn back to
Dunbar, planning to run the half distance once we got
back. Although the rain got heavier – so we had
coffee and shortbread instead. Good training hey?

We did head out later on on the Sunday, at about 4pm.
The rain was now a light drizzle, although it was
still misty. We ran up from Belhaven to Eweford,
Wester Broomhouse, closed road to Spott. Then onto
the second ford and round to Pitcox, back along to
little Spott and down Daniel’s Brae and back up to
Spott. Then down to Spott roundabout, along the cycle
path to the other road into Dunbar near the cemetery.
Along into Dunbar, along the high street and down Back
Road to Belhaven. Felt a bit tough, but I kept it
going up all the hills, which is only about the second
time I’ve managed to get up some of them. Needless
to say I was knackered afterwards!

Tuesday night was club night, but due to train
disasters only made it in time to head out with Hannah
and Jenny. We ran through the trees, up round Eweford
and down into West Barnes. From there we followed the
town route along shore road, up back road, down round
the harbour, and then along Spott road and Lochend
road back to the club. Variations on a theme for the
next 6 months I guess……

Thursday night – and guess who was the only woman
doing intervals? Yup you guessed it. There were only
four of us and needless to say there was a bit of a
gap between the other three and me. Anne was taking
the session as Ian was away camping in Geneva. Lucky
sod. Anyway the plan was to run 2x400m in 2.5mins,
1x800m in 5mins, 1xmile in 10mins, 1x800m in 5mins and
2x400m in 2.5mins. I decided to make life a bit
easier for myself and ran 2x400m in 3mins, 1x800m in
6mins, 1x1200m in 9mins, 1x800m in 6mins and 2x400m in
3mins. The session felt soooooooo hard and my legs
were allllll heavy. It was horrrrrrrrible.

On Friday my legs were sore.

On Saturday Sheila M and I went on a new epic
adventure. From Belhaven, up to Eweford, Wester
Broomhouse, Closed Road and then up behind Spott Home
farm. Down the Brunt and up the other side (although
I didn’t run far up it…..) along and round to
Aikengall. Then we ran over a nice wee path to
Oldhamstocks, along some roads and crossed over near
Torness to run round East Barnes, to Whitesands, round
the golf course, through town and round the cliff edge
and the Winterfield golf course back to Belhaven.
Lovely weather…..and lots of mars bars.

Then my knee hurt. Still does a bit – when I try and
do certain things with it – so following my mums
excellent advice I just won’t move it that way for a
bit…

Lunch at Sheila’s with Sheila K dropping in. She had
parked her boat for a wee stop and trip home. Off
again today I think with about another 4 weeks sailing
until she’s made it round.
