a long awaited update...

My computer has been broken and had to get it fixed -
it’s not even that old. Bloody technology.

Anyway my last entry was Sheila M & I and our long
trek through Oldhamstocks. Ran a few since then but
not sure they were all that exciting.

On 3/10/06 we went out on the town run – it was dark
and wet. Couldn’t hack it so only did about 4.5
miles.

Thursday 5/10/06 was the first handicap 5km around the
houses of the year. Tried to run a tactical race (ha
ha – given that there were only 4 of us running I had
a one in 4 chance of winning, but unfortunately also
had a one in 4 chance of coming last.) Anyway didn’t
set off too fast and tried to finish faster – finished
fast but only as I stopped breathing half way down
Kellie Rd for the final time. Anyway final time was
25.11 – about 30 secs slower than my fastest time from
last year. At least it wasn’t slower than my slowest
time from last year…. (and no, I wasn’t last. Helpful
that Fay and I went first though.)

Sat 7/10/06 was Doon Hill race. I was marshalling –
and at the last minute most club mates ended up doing
the same (even Ian Rowland who did start running but
had to stop to marshal at one point. And he still
finished faster than I would have if I had run the
whole way…..) It was good to watch – my marshalling
skills are improving. I managed to shout “well done”
to most folk running past. Obviously I didn’t shout
anything at George Armstrong – far too scared about
what he might have shouted back. Need to think about
how I progress my marshalling for next year – Frank
suggested shouting “very well done” at a few people –
think I might manage to build that into the
repertoire.

I had gone to bed on the Friday evening planning to
get up early to fit a 9 miler in before I had to go
and help out at Halhill, however my nice warm bed was
proving too hard to leave so unfortunately had to go
out for a trot in the pm. Did around 9 miles from
Sheila’s – through John Muir (although diversion round
West Barnes due to fact a very high tide meant there
was no path near the Biel burn. We ran on over the A1
and round Hedderwick, back to Belhaven with our
diversion through West Barnes again.

On Sunday 08/10/06 we headed out for a longer run, and
got some lovely weather again. Headed out from
Belhaven up to Eweford, Wester Broomhouse, Closed
Road, Spott, Second Ford, Pitcox, Stenton, on to
Luggate, round to Kippielaw, down to East Linton and
through John Muir to Belhaven. A good run with a few
hills in there, of which I ran up them
all………………………………except for the one out of Stenton. Got
halfway up that one and thought I’d better conserve
some energy……

Tuesday – town run. Managed to keep going for over an
hour this week. Only ‘cos Hannah was so excited about
getting engaged! (congratulations) We had lots to chat
about.

Thursday 12/10/06 – intervals again. Ian’s says he’s
trying to slow us down for winter – don’t think he’ll
need to do much where I’m concerned. Legs seem to
quite like going slowly. Anyway did 12x400m in 2mins
45secs. Val and I obviously had the right idea as we
were able to speed up along the way. Others obviously
tried too hard at the beginning and started slowing
down by the end. Val also had a great plan of going
to the toilet in the middle. Must keep that in mind
for any hard sessions in the future….

Saturday 14/10/06 – Val, Sheila and I headed out for a
long one. Unfortunately I didn’t measure it in
advance. Anyway it was a nice day…. Ran from
Belhaven, through John Muir, through path in field,
along by Tyne, crossed at Knowes and up towards
Lawhead, back through Smeaton and along the Tyne to
Knowes. Then we headed up to the A1 from Knowes and
crossed over the bridge and ran on to Biel (nice
hills) and joined the road from Stenton to Pitcox.
Once we got to Pitcox we agreed on shortest route home
– down to roundabout on A1 and over shortcut to West
Barnes, along dump road and back to Belhaven.

Sunday 15/10/06 – initially I thought about doing 9
miles, then 8, and by the time I actually headed out I
had got it down to between 3-4 miles. I ran from my
house down to Pinkerton, round the bottom of Doon hill
and on to Spott house. I was then going to run
through the field (as per Doon hill race) and round
back home. I got up the hill in the field and saw a
cow. On its own. I didn’t stay long enough to check
it out – it could even have been a bull. So that was
about turn and back the way I came. I ran through
Pinkerton again and run up the field they use in the
Doon Hill race. I made it up – just – and thought to
myself that it was hard enough doing that – why on
earth would people run up that, turn right at the top
to run up the undulating road, then run up round the
field to the trig point? Madness…….
