help required.....

Well on Saturday I thought about running – and that is
about as much as I managed….I went down to Alnwick
with Brian (fishing shop) in the best part of the day.
When we finally got home it was getting dark and I
couldn’t be bothered, so decided to do an exercise
video or two instead. Although, I then asked Brian to
remind me next time that running (probably up to 20
miles) is easier than my Tae Bo video, and the whole
session served to remind how not fit I am.

So on Sunday I decided to take the easier option (ha)
by running. I ran down through Pinkerton and round
the bottom of Doon Hill, behind Spott Farm and down
Starvation Brae. Doing ok so far….then headed through
Spott and up Daniel’s Brae. Clearly I didn’t have my
positive thinking head on as I only made it about a
third of the way up at which point I started walking.
Then I felt bad so started running again. It was a
bit breezy last Sunday so I think the wind had taken
it out of me a bit. When I turned from Little Spott
and down onto the road from Pitcox to Eweford the wind
was behind me so I managed to run up a few hills with
absolutely no effort at all – loads better. Then I
headed up by the Pleasance (head wind) to Wester
Broomhouse, down the closed road and up behind the
house with the red chimney. Ran up to the gate and
then walked all the way through the field. The wind
was so strong by this point that even walking up was a
struggle. Through Pinkerton at high speed (back wind
again) and up through the field walking into head on
gale. Not sure I’ve been so glad to see home in a
long time. Not sure that was easier than a wee video
in front of the TV.

On Tuesday we had a meeting after club so a shorter
run was required. I ran with Fiona and Alison – we
ran round West Barns, along Shore Road, Back Road, the
pool, the harbour, and then along the main street to
see the lights, along some other paths (to change the
scenery….wow different route) and back to club. Did
52 mins in all.

Thursday was 5km handicap night. I hate it – with a
passion. It’s tooooooo hard…… Anyway I had a sore
back all day so thought running might be even worse.
Had to keep telling myself to relax, breathing wasn’t
so hard – for the first 100m or so. Sheila had set
off in front of me so had to try to catch her – I did
but probably only because she hadn’t been well. Then
quite a few others caught me up. Ar least I made it!

On Saturday Val, Sheila and I went out for a short run
around John Muir – we ran from Belhaven across dump
road to the burn, then through to West Barns and along
to the turning to East Links, down the road and round
the farm and back through the park to Belhaven. Val
was running well. As was Sheila. I kept up.

And now to today. Yuk. Felt terrible. Back still
sore (since Thursday) and it was windy. Today was the
festive half and 10km. I was down to do the half (in
2hrs05 even though it took me 2hr15 last year) and
this was the longest that I had run since the
marathon. Anyway it felt it. I struggled all the way.
It was horrible. When I finished I’m not sure which
parts of my body didn’t hurt. I’m so glad Fiona
stayed with me or I might have stopped and started
crying somewhere! Everything ached! I’m now getting
over it, after relaxing on the sofa all afternoon. Oh
well, hopefully next year I’ll get somewhere near a
reasonable time – I was even slower this year than
last!
